Jennifer Lawrence is returning to the role that made her a global star. After months of speculation, she confirmed in an October 2026 interview that she would appear as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
But the actress returning to Panem has spent the intervening years doing more than waiting for another franchise film. Her recent work includes a difficult drama with Lynne Ramsay, producing projects through Excellent Cadaver and joining Martin Scorsese for a film alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.
At 36, Lawrence has both an instantly recognisable screen identity and a career that increasingly takes her beyond it. The new Hunger Games appearance brings those two sides together. [1][2][3]

Biographical details, family reporting and film credits are drawn from the sources listed below.
Jennifer Lawrence’s return to The Hunger Games
Lawrence confirmed her return during an appearance on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, reported by ABC News on 28 October 2026. She described reuniting with familiar crew members and co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson as an emotional experience.
Sunrise on the Reaping centres on a younger Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, during the 50th Hunger Games. It is therefore not a straightforward continuation of Katniss’s story. ABC reported a cinema release date of 20 November 2026. [1]
Variety separately reported that Lawrence and Hutcherson were returning for a scene. It noted that Suzanne Collins’s novel ends with a flash-forward involving familiar characters, while treating the film’s apparent use of that device as an inference. That distinction matters: a confirmed appearance does not establish every detail of how a film will use it. [7]
For audiences who followed Lawrence through the original films, the attraction is obvious. The character is familiar; the actress’s career since then gives the reunion a different context.
The breakthrough that came before Katniss
Lawrence had already attracted serious attention before The Hunger Games arrived in 2012. Her early screen work included The Bill Engvall Show, and Winter’s Bone in 2010 brought her first Academy Award nomination. [8][5]
That order is easy to overlook. The franchise expanded her audience enormously, but her recognition as a dramatic performer came first.
Her early filmography also included The Burning Plain. She then played Mystique in X-Men: First Class in 2011, beginning another major franchise association. Subsequent X-Men appearances included Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. [2]
Seen together, those choices explain why a simple label has never quite fitted her. She moved between intimate drama and effects-heavy studio films early in her career, rather than completing one phase before starting the other. The later shifts into comedy and producing continue that pattern.
An Oscar at 22
Lawrence won the Best Actress Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook at the February 2013 ceremony, when she was 22. The Academy’s records distinguish the film’s 2012 release year from the year in which the award was presented. [9]
Her collaborations with director David O. Russell continued with American Hustle and Joy. By the 2016 ceremony, the Academy recorded four nominations: Winter’s Bone, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy. American Hustle was the supporting-actress nomination; the other three were for leading performances. [5]
She also won Golden Globes for Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy. Later Globe nominations included No Hard Feelings and Die My Love. [2]
The significance is broader than an awards total. Those films established a body of work outside Katniss while she was still closely associated with the franchise. Her profile was already built around several kinds of performance.
Why Die My Love matters to her recent career
Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love screened in competition at Cannes in 2025. Lawrence plays Grace, opposite Robert Pattinson as Jackson; the cast also includes Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte and LaKeith Stanfield. [6]
The project has a revealing origin. In a November 2025 BFI interview, Lawrence discussed how Martin Scorsese had sent Ariana Harwicz’s novel to her production company, Excellent Cadaver, in 2020. He imagined her in the central role.
She described being drawn to the character’s emotional intensity and explained that adapting the novel meant finding a cinematic expression for its inner world. This was a project she helped develop, not simply a finished script arriving with an offer attached. [10]
Playing Grace did not mean playing herself
The same BFI interview makes an important distinction between Lawrence and her character. She said her own experience after having her first child had been positive, while motherhood deepened her understanding of love, fear and change.
That is useful context for a film about a new mother’s distress. An actor’s connection to the material should not be mistaken for evidence that the fictional events describe her private life. [10]
Her husband Cooke Maroney and their children
Lawrence married art gallery director Cooke Maroney in October 2019. Their first child, a son named Cy, arrived in 2022. News that the couple had welcomed their second child was reported in 2025. [4][8][11]
Her family life is a frequent subject of coverage, but it offers only a partial view of the person behind the performances. Publicly confirmed milestones can be reported without treating every photograph or rumour as a further disclosure.
In her BFI conversation, she discussed parenthood chiefly through its effect on her emotional understanding as an actress. That provides a more useful connection to her work than speculation about private routines. [10]
What Happens at Night and the films still ahead
On 19 March 2026, an Apple Original Films announcement published by the Czech Film Commission confirmed that production had begun on What Happens at Night.
Scorsese directs, with Lawrence and DiCaprio both starring and producing. Adapted from Peter Cameron’s novel, it follows an American couple travelling to a snowy European town to adopt a baby. The announced cast also includes Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, Jared Harris and Welker White.
The announcement establishes the project and its principal photography; it should not be read as a release-date confirmation. It also identifies The Wives as another upcoming film in which Lawrence is set to star and produce.
A separate September 2026 report from TheWrap announced her casting in Zach Cregger’s science-fiction thriller The Flood, with an announced release date of 11 August 2028. That remains a future schedule, rather than a completed release. [12]
For Jennifer Lawrence, returning to Katniss sits alongside these new commitments. The familiar role will bring audiences back to a defining part of her career, while her producing work and collaborations with Ramsay and Scorsese show how much has developed around it.
